Norfolk & Western Engine #611 operates a passenger excursion at the Strasburg Rail Road in the Amish Country of Lancaster County, PA.

Built in 1950 as a Class J 4-8-4 steam locomotive at the N&W Roanoke shops, it arrived at a time in history when steam was about to be replaced by diesel and therefore only served in mainline service until 1959. It's primary purpose was pulling premier passenger trains such as the Powhatan Arrow, Pocahantas, Cavalier, and the Tennesean. This particular engine even pulled the campaign train of Dwight D. Eisenhower, the Eisenhower Special, during his winning bid for President of the United States of Ameica.

Known as "Queen of Steam" and "Spirit of Roanoke," this streamlined giant has a significant history in passenger excursion service spanning multiple decades and is currently owned by the Virginia Museum of Transportation.

I am a photographer and graphite portrait artist. I specialize in shooting railroad, automotive, and fire apparatus but enjoy all types of photography. My primary camera is a Nikon D5.
